Inward House

Inward House is a compact home organized around a central living room that acts as the heart of the house. The kitchen, bedrooms, and supporting spaces are arranged around this shared core, creating a strong sense of connection and togetherness within a relatively small footprint.

The project explores a balance between two cultural approaches to domestic living. While Western homes often prioritize separation and privacy between rooms, traditional Japanese spaces tend to embrace permeability, visual connection, and a greater awareness of shared living. Inward House seeks a unison between these ideas, allowing spaces to feel connected while still providing moments of retreat and privacy.

The central living room becomes the anchor that ties the home together both spatially and visually. A lowered roof plane over the living space creates a unique condition for the bedrooms. Above, an elevated courtyard introduces natural light deep into the rooms while visually linking the private spaces across the upper level. The result is a home that feels intimate, connected, and quietly communal.
