Adaptive Reuse for Child Care
Green House Child Care is a ground-floor conversion of an existing house into a multi-age childcare space for up to eight children. The project focuses on adapting a domestic setting into a safe, flexible, and engaging environment that supports daily childcare activities while meeting regulatory requirements.
Opening Up the Interior
Inside, an interior wall was removed to open up the plan and create a generous activity room with clear sightlines and improved daylight. A new exit door was added along the side of the building to provide safe and direct egress, improving both functionality and code compliance.
Designing for Child Safety
The bathroom was reconfigured to be child-safe, with the shower head and door removed and fixtures adjusted for young users. Existing upper cabinets and secondary counters were also removed to comply with zoning bylaws that strictly limit cabinetry and sinks in order to prevent illegal secondary suites.
A Playful and Secure Outdoor Space
Outdoors, the backyard was fully renovated to create a secure and stimulating play environment. New gates were installed, deteriorated concrete pathways were replaced, and a range of playful elements were added, including a sandbox, log steps, picnic table, playhouse, and custom signage, transforming the yard into an engaging extension of the indoor space.
